Santiago!

I have lived always in Santiago, if well I was born at hospital from Quinta Normal (I don’t remember specifically what) I never lived in that commune. First I lived in La Granja in my grandmother’s house until we moved to Puente Alto when I was six years old where we live at present.

I have to admit than don’t know many places of Santiago, because before than know a new one I prefer my favorites places as: Forestall park (in the picture), Bellas Artes Museum, Quinta Normal park, Santa Lucia hill, San Cristobal hill. Also I like not specifics places with this I mean I like so much just walking freely on Alameda and Providencia Avenue.

These places are my favorites because I feel so relax when I stay in some of them, I just contemplating the people pass, talking, buying, etc. I like that movement, that life in Santiago center (around Alameda Avenue). Whereas in Providence Av. I enjoy the beauty of this builds and why don’t say it, for its cleanliness.

If a tourist ask me What can I do in Santiago? or What place do you recommend to visit? I answer, It depends from your likes, You should know that Santiago It’s so diversity. My battery of places than I recommend you for knowing are:

1. Matucana 100, always there are arts exhibitions or plays of theatre. And it is near from the next place.

2. Quinta Normal park, it is an enormous and beauty park. You tourist could see a lot of Chileans families share there. And visit our National Museum of Natural History and Balmaceda 1215 a culture and artistic center where the activities and exhibitions are did by youngs.

3. If you want hear new chilean music you can go to SCD (I suggest than you prefer which is in Bellavista, thus after the concert you could pass a good time in some pub of the neighborhood). Or also you can go to Sala Master La Batuta, or my favorite pub: Clandestino.

4. If you (my dear tourist) prefer to dance, you can’t miss Papagallo the best place for dancing salsa. It is in Alameda Av.

5. If you are interest in the history of Chile, you must to visit La Moneda and the Museum of the Memory. In the first place you see the where the democracy was brutally attacked (even the marks of pulls is those walls) and in the Museum of the Memory you can know what happened before, duering and after that sad episode our history.

Finally for lunching you must to go to Mercado Central (as the tourist in the picture), there exist a lot of dishes with a incredible variety of marine Chilean products.

Music

Since one year ago my Mp3 player breakdown and I don’t have buy a new one so I don’t listen much music how I want, because it is obvious than you couldn’t bring with you a radio on the bus or subway (My cell phone hasn’t a music player) that would be uncomfortable an expensive you know charge a lot of batteries one and other time again.

But when I at home making some housework I put any disc of music for changing that moment of work in time of relax. Can be any disc of music don’t necessarily mine. Because I like the all kinds of music in general (less reaggueton or electronic music, I dance without problem this styles but only in the context of a party). At the last time I prefer listen music in other languages like English or Portuguese (Cazuza), for development my skills in English and begin approximate to the language of Brazil (and its music so taste).

Other influence have been my friends Thomas and Tomás than have motivated me with their commentaries about the classics rock songs and specifics bands (The animals, The Beatles, Pink Floyd) than I have never listened before because my likes were delimit to the next styles: Andean folklore, latin rock as: Andrés Calamaro, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, La Bersuit, Sordromo, Habana abierta; and mainly Chilean rock as: Joe Vasconcellos, Fother Muckers, Leo Quinteros, Los Tres, Los Bunkers, Mecánica Popular, Gepe (pop-fusion-reggae you know there are groups that fused different styles and it more than interesting for me at same the emergent bands).

Parallel I feel a strong attraction for soundtracks from films like Once and Magnolia and in the last month I just want to see musical films I think that it is great how they get to give more rhythm to the dialogues the last musical films I saw are Tenacious D, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
I couldn’t imagine my life without music among all the lyrics that have accompanied me at special moments.

Transantiago

About our public system of transport “Transantiago, the new face of Santiago” I think that is better at least two aspects than its predecessor (the system of traditional yellow buses). The first aspect is about environment contamination: Transantiago is less noisy and pollutant and the second aspect is about the pleasure that produce see it maybe this sounds some exaggerated but I believe that Transantiago yes give to Santiago a new face with more variability of color and less messy (those buses looked if it sold separately with seats in bad conditions, without lights inside or with a string instead of a bell).

But Transantiago also has worse aspects than the previous system for example now you must combine different routes or means of transport as the underground and bus for arriving at your destination. If well maybe someone considerate this aspect it isn’t a radical problem but rather a problem of custom. I think it is a problem in the most of cases because before Transantiago the routes or trips in general were more direct than nowdays. Addition have decreased the number of routes and machines by routes and if this be little exists a big frequency problem at some opportunities two, three or four buses of the same route pass one after other, late doesn’t pass anyone to until half hour or fourty five minutes more. And Its seats are so uncomfortable especially those that are on wheels.

Before Transantiago you knew that busses would pass but now you can’t be sure also you had a lot of different chances of travel for example if I had start study when yet existed the pre-transantiago system I had can toke four different routes for arriving to university. But now I depend completely of underground and the approach buses. Uf! And is better don’t speak about the underground (always it is crowed and people push and push you).

Transantiago has changed from its begin to actual status, now is better because have increase the quantity of buses (but it isn’t enough yet) and have been amplied. For improving Transantiago I think that is necessary increase the number of buses by routes, improve the indications in the bus stop and check the wait time. The last thing before finishing this post, I don’t understand why doesn’t open the first door that has the advertisement only for crippled persons or of third age.

A COUNTRY I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT

I would like to go Brazil mainly because I feel curious for the Brazilians and their life style and too I would travel across natural exotics places. When I watched Up! (The animation film) I felt an uncontrollable wish for travelling in especially to a country where there are exotics natural areas.
Who don’t hear about “the biggest country of the world”? Is famous for its carnivals (specially by The Carnival of Río), its soccer selection and its people (good for singing bossa nova and dancing samba).
Only I know about its food is that exist some kiosks where you can buy a corn cob and season it as I season a hot-dog. And also sell any topical fruit and its respective juices.
If well there rain frequently but the sun doesn’t stop of shinning, I think that is a nice and refreshing combination.
My girlfriend and one of her friends went to Brazil the last summer. And her commentaries and pictures describe at least the place that they visited as beautiful and quiet. They say than you can see a big spider, birds of a lot of colors, a mouse so big as a cat,
Finally I want to add that I would like no just visit it, I would like to live there. I want to study a post degree there at Federal University of Río de Janeiro, related with Public health. But always I think that if I go to other country to live after a decade I would return to Chile for making some contribution to develop the quality of life with knowledge and the most important with a new attitude front to life.
I want to try their style of life, more community (at least mi girlfriend describe thus the behavior of residents and tourists of the Island that her visit).

My last term

Three weeks ago I went back to study at university after a couple of vacation's weeks. With new courses and the new experience of going to a different faculty is more easy to refer my last semester. Because now I can weigth the appropriateness of my last courses.

In general the last term was difficult for me, mainly by my doubts about the speciality than I chose.I wasn't concentrate in my courses so I didn't study enough, I spent my time imagine where I would be if I had chose other speciality.

I learnt the most important indicators for estimating sex and age (from human skeletal remains)in , this activities constitute the basic knowlodges than a physical anthropology should know.

I'm not sure if correct at least in my case to do the difference betwen free time and study or academic time, becouse when I had to study I went to a walk with my dog or I visited my girlfriend. And after that I spent a lot of nights studying or doing works than was for the next day.

Late I realized than it was damaging for my physical and mental health. If well I had various courses than don't interest me and also they were very hard, It was my fault got bad final marks and lost some kilograms of weigth.

The best thing of my last semester was to know that I rely on a great little course.

My first blog and my blogging expierence

Write a little notes about me, my career, my friends or my plans in English has been something good for me by two reasons. First I felt comfortable writing and sharing some personal ideas than It will be a testimony of me and for me, because in a near future when I remember this blog and I read my notes I will see how an what things has changed in my personal and academic life. The second reason is that through activities on blog I improve my skills to write in English and that is cool, because parallel you improve your reading and understanding ability of English texts.
After I wrote than I have felt comfortable writing but I must add that I feel so nervous when I have to talk, and the only one thing that I sorry is that we haven't more time for practice talks for to improve our skills related to interacting directly.
I think that work's blog could do it at house and this way we could have more time to practice and improve our comunication skills face to face.

My ideal job

My ideal job would be work in a health organization of research and intervention in latin american, like WHO (World Health Organization) or like Unicef.
I won't work a office, I want do a lot of fieldwork about nutrition and its consequences in the social aspects and vice versa, about infection illness too.

For to get a job like above I need know how collect and analyze a big quantity of biostatic data. I have thought study a Magister degree in Biostatistics at our University and after that study a Doctor degree in Human nutrition or Public health at Federal University of Río of Janeiro.

About difficulties First I need to develop a career as researcher, but I believe that as Physical athropologist I will get the profile and abilities for research. And I have some more important: the pasion to contribute to desing and apply news political of nutrition to improve the life quality of latin americans specially of child.

The creativity as the pathway

I just heard the Sir Robinson's speech. Some points of what he said are interesting for to discuss. The creativity as victim murder of the school, the school as instrument of political and economical interests, the reproduction of social system and its inequalities (associated with capitalist values).

The school is a social institution through wich the child are incorporate formally as part our society. They receive a formation that persuit to make them useful persons to the society in the future.

Of the above it results understandable, at least in a some grade, that some values penetrates deeply in the schoolar child (future workers) and in his fathers, through talks with their kids, in their works or through mass media. What I mean is that the school is a important social space of trassmision of values. In our case of values directed to consumerism, individualism, competivity, and the purpose of to improve the production and not necessary to improve the social welfare.

This is a elaborated form of alienation, and for to keep the social order they do seem like if it were normal even desirable. They kill the creativity through of which is socially expected.

I believe that the one way for to go out of this unhealthy reproduction of capitalist values is through creativity, we need imagine other differents ways of order and be critical of present system.

My favorite subject

All tuesday I have a great time because I have my favorite subject: Physical Anthropology I. I like its becuase we examine human osseous pieces after to discuss the methodological aspects of identification: how estimate sex and age.

Although at begining it was a bit weird manipulate remains of adults and of child. Now I feel so good learning specific things about our bodies and their changes, about our diversity.

Also this course is very important because what we learn is the basis for the identification of human remains and thus in the future as forensic anthropologist, I will be able to assume a heavy responsibility:
Telling a family with certainty "Yes, it's him" and give them a minimum of tranquility.

After the class of Tuesday I want not anymore than to rest on my bed, because the most of class time (since 10:15 to 16:00), we have that to stand up around the central table of examination. ¡But It's the class that I enjoy most!

My future plans

I will finish my degree of Physical anthropology at University of Chile in the next two and half years. I will take some courses of Social anthropology, since fourth year, because I want to complement my profile as researcher of bio-culturals processes.
After that I'm not sure. Exist many areas for develop me as Physical anthropologist, all it will all depends on my interests and if I get a scholarship to study a Masters or PhD, or failing if I can save enough money to pay one.
For example if I decide to follow the forensic area, it would be great go to study to The Forensic Anthropology Center at University of Tennessee.
Or If I decide will work with populations alive I would continue my formation with the posgrades programs of: Escola Nacional De Saude Publica Rio De Janeiro at University f Rio in Brasil, HENGE at Cambridge University in UK, Escuela de Salud Pública at University of Chile.

(I will refer later to my personal plans -not academic-. Because now I have no time to continue. Sorry.)

The best in my area

"From the Laboratory to the Field"

I'm not sure if he is the best in bioantrhopology, but at least he is a important Bioanthropologist. Nicholas Mascie-Taylor is director of HENGE (Human Epidemology Nutrition Growth Ecology Research Group, this entity is part of Cambridge University.
So the HENGE is a institut of academic formation, It offers a Masters course in Applied Biological Anthropology.
In my last post I said than "I'm interested to develop a line of research about populations alive", I alluded to this type of investigation.
He synthesizes really well than I believe, like bioanthropologist we can't understand the differents human diseases from only biolociacal sciences, and the same way we can't understand the social process without to considerate our biological dimension.
In other words we must to develop a approach from the combination of the social and natural sciences for -as He says- to provide the most comprehensive understanding.
I like his concpetion of the bioanthropology, because I think than betwen the culture and how the people live they diseases exists a strong connection.
And when we will do any field-work or applied research, we have to remember than association if we pretend to offer a viable solution for problems lnked with disease, nutritional status, growth and reproductive ecology.

My career

If you had seen my profile, you know that I am studying Anthropology with mention in Physical Anthropology at university of Chile. The actual semester I started the program of specialty (it is lasts three years), before I had two years of Common cycle. In that period I studied a lot of courses connected with the Social Sciences, and a couple of courses with directly relation with my mention. The problem of this situation is that, actually, we have to learn a lot of things in a little time, so you can imagine the academic charge of theoretical and methodological aspects that it refers to Biocultural science.

I haven't decided in what specific area of research I will work, but I'm interested to develop a line of research about populations alive, because I believe that in this area I can merge my social vocation and the biological knowledge than I will learn as Physical anthropologist. And through studies this type I hope to contribute to the scientific knowledge and also to develop the life quality of persons than is the most important for me.

Lamentably, this semester has been difficult for me because I had a lot of doubts as “If I chosen my specialty correctly”, I imagined how be if I had chosen Social anthropology. But now I realized than the end of semester is so close than there isn’t time for doubts or any other distraction.
Since now I am going to focus in to pass my exams. At my next vacation I will have time to think what is better for me.

One of my favorites photographs

In this photograp it is Francisca (my girlfriend)and me. It was taken at Francisca's house, about three years ago. That day was wonderful, we had a important conversation about us.
She gave a copy of this photograph with a artesenal frame at San Valentine's day. She decorated it (the frame) with the next phrase: "I lov ju" and she added a little group of bananas in the corner. "I lov ju" is part of one of our game, that game consists in saying to each other loving messages in other languages but after "chilenizarlas". And the bananas represents other gift for me, because she said that I was a gorilla.
I have this gift on my shelf in my bedroom. When I go into my bedroom, it is the first thing I see and I feel so in love as if I could explode of emotion. Because I remember all we had passed together, and how we left our difficulties in the past.

My last vacations

My last vacations my family and me went to Talca, specifically, we went to cabin at place called "Valshi" by two weeks. We traveled a long time on hot bus, about four hours.
We spent a lot of time to went for a longs walks surrounded by the amazing natural environment. If well there was a swimming pool we went to the river, there we could rest and refreshing us with so peaceful because there wasn't anybody apart from us.
I will never forget when my father, my little sister, my nephew and me tryed to build a swimming pool or some like that in the river. We put stones over stones other and other again for to build a little walls.
My little dog went too, this it was very important to me. Because since the last vacations my mother loves Clementina (our dog). And I will never forget when Clementina ran behind the chickens, It was so funny.
I didn't met new friends, but I had a great time with my family. Just there was a only bad thing, my father had to return a week before us because work's reasons.

My favorite piece of technology

Before to write about of “My favorite piece of technology” I want to apologize with Miss Zagal, because I’m not sure if i follow the instructions correctly for to do this activity* (I followed the similar structure from my blog's classmates). I hope do it well.
Now after of I presented my excuses I going to write about my favorites pieces of technology, I going to refer to my digital camera, if well it isn’t an ultra camera, it’s great, because I can take a lot of photographs without to loose the picture’s quality in very differents conditions of luminosity, for example. And it’s so small, that I can take it with me always, except when somebody of my family needs it. I love take photographs because these help me to remember good moments -I have a terrible capacity to remember, always I feel than i'm forgetting something-.
At the second paragraph I wrote “favorites pieces of technology”, because I have a lot of technological things than I like them. They are useful for me: My dvd’s, my pendrive, my cell phone. I going to refer rapidly about the last objects than I mentioned.
About the dvd’s, I consider them as a great progress in the memory capacity because they are so fine and light -and they can contain more than 4 GB of information-. With the dvd technology I can transport so easly a lot of my films.
About the pendrives I want to indicate that today is to easy to share and to transport information, pictures and songs from a pc to other pc with these small pieces of technology.
And finally about my cell phone, I like it because thanks to it I can talk with my friends, family and my dear girlfriend at anytime and anywhere.
Bye.

My best friend

Hi again, today I going to write about my best friend, his name is Tomás.
He is a classmate of degree, obviously I met him at university two and half years ago.
I don't remeber well the circumstances of our first encounter, it was in the first week of welcome to the university.
We didn't talk at beginning , we began to talk after to know that both we are from Puente Alto (between our houses there is very little distance). Then among talks about our studies at school, we realised that we had some classmates in commom.
This classmates in common was students at his school until second year of secondary education, then they was stundents of my school until fourth year of secondary education.
We started to do our works of degree together. In our banal talks (and serious), we discovered taht we share a lot of interests and a sense of humor similar.
We haven't had greats adventure yet, but it is more than enough the great confidence we have one in the other, and a lot of funny and good moments.

Something about me

My name is Gabriel Cavieres, I have 20 years, I am from Santiago (Chile). At currently, I’m student of third year of Physical Anthropology at the ‘Universidad de Chile’.

What I like to do is be with my girlfriend, have fun with my friends, watching movies, and recently go out to dance. I am interested in everything related with animals and anthropology.

I lived in the home of maternal grandmother up to when had five years old in La Cisterna, then we moved to where we now live in Puente Alto. It is a good neighborhood, but you can’t go walking at night without some fear. In Puente Alto went to two colleges: ‘Aldea María Reina’ and ‘Monte de Asís’, in the latter I did very good friends, and I had teachers very committed to the education of students.

I live with my parents and my three sisters, we got along well, but with who get well is with my nephew, he's six years old. He and I go to the park ride bike; there we play a lot with our dog. I like to encourage it to sports because sports helped me learn to work together. My favorite sports are table tennis, volleyball and basketball, but he prefers soccer (I've never been good for football soccer).

About what will come ... I will pass my subjects of this semester, and, I will strive to make that this task not distance me from my girlfriend and friends. We all know that the time is so valuable and we don’t realize when it gone.

I hope to continue soon.
